At Chadron’s Hope Foundation we are driven by a single goal: to improve the lives of people living with Down syndrome and developmental disabilities in Tanzania. Chadron’s Hope Foundation envisions a world where all children with developmental disabilities are supported to reach their maximum potential and have an equitable chance at a satisfying life. In our work we experience a range of emotions when working with our families. We hear stories of joy and unconditional love to stories of great abandonment and loss. Within all these stories lies the humanity of individual’s experiences. The estimated incidence of Down syndrome world-wide is between 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 live births worldwide. Unfortunately, exact numbers for Down syndrome or other various medical conditions are not available in Tanzania for many reasons. However, seeing the lack of resources and services for families is well known and often evident in most communities. Due to limited access to resources and services, lower levels of education; parents and caregivers of children with disability tend to be less informed and hence, not knowing how to adequately support these children. Lack of awareness and accurate information about developmental disabilities has resulted into parents and caregivers of children with Down syndrome being subjected to social exclusion, discrimination, cultural stigmas, stereotypes and prejudices. As such, some extended family members tend to be reluctant and unwilling to contribute to and support the raising of a child with Down syndrome, fearing scrutiny and discrimination from other member of the society. Often, children with Down syndrome are raised by single, unemployed parents who are faced with unmeasurable constraints and no financial support from the government.
At Chadron’s Hope Foundation we are driven by a single goal: to improve the lives of people living with Down’s syndrome and developmental disabilities in Tanzania.
